Integrating AI into English Language Pedagogy: A Transformative Shift for Teachers and Learners

This paper is a summary of the third keynote speaker presentation at the 4th ICHELAC conference by Dr. Anuncius Gumawang Jati, M.A (Institut Teknologi Bandung).

The AI-Powered Language Tutor

In the rapidly evolving field of education, AI-powered tools such as Tutor Lily and Duolingo have become invaluable assets for language learners. These platforms provide personalized tutoring, adapt to individual learning styles, and offer interactive exercises that enhance language acquisition. However, the introduction of advanced AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini marks a new era in English language learning, offering capabilities that go far beyond traditional language learning tools.

The AI-Powered Language Test

AI-driven language tests are revolutionizing how proficiency is assessed. These tests can dynamically adjust their difficulty based on the learner's responses, providing a more accurate measure of language skills. Moreover, they offer immediate feedback, helping learners understand their mistakes and improve more efficiently. This innovation underscores the transformative impact of AI in language education.

Generative AI Changing the Game

Generative AI, represented by models such as ChatGPT and Gemini, is significantly altering the landscape of English language learning. These tools provide students with powerful language models for generating text, translations, and more, necessitating an evolution in the role of teachers. This technological advancement is no longer science fiction but a present-day reality that educators must adapt to. The rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini is reshaping the way language is taught and learned, making education more interactive and personalized.

ChatGPT and Gemini

Both ChatGPT and Gemini offer unique capabilities that enhance different aspects of language learning:

1)      Conversational and Dialogue Simulation

·         ChatGPT (The Master of Conversation Mimicry): ChatGPT excels in mimicking human conversation with remarkable accuracy, creating realistic and engaging dialogue flows. It offers a variety of conversation styles and tones, making it a versatile tool for practicing spoken language skills.

·         Gemini (Beyond Text: Unlocking Information Through Multimodality)**: Gemini processes and understands images, videos, and audio, providing richer and deeper insights from diverse data. This enables more comprehensive and detailed analysis, making it an excellent tool for exploring multimodal content and enhancing comprehension through various media.

2)      Creative Writing and Text Generation:

·         ChatGPT (Powerful Text Generation): ChatGPT is adept at crafting poems, scripts, news articles, and more. It generates narratives based on prompts and explores different writing styles and genres, making it a powerful tool for creative writing exercises.

·         Gemini (Creative Writing Companion): Gemini generates story ideas, character descriptions, and plot twists. It adapts writing styles to different genres, helping writers overcome writer's block and generating ideas from images. This makes Gemini a valuable companion for more visual and creative storytelling tasks.

3)      Demo Capabilities

·         ChatGPT: Acts as a scholarly gap finder, helping students identify areas in their knowledge that need improvement.

·         Gemini: Integrates with platforms like Google Drive to read and analyze documents, providing insights and facilitating collaborative learning.

Practical Application in the Classroom

Educators like Jati have successfully integrated ChatGPT and Gemini into their classrooms through a structured approach:

·         Stage 1: Brainstorming Ideas with AI - Students use AI tools to generate and refine their ideas.

·         Stage 2: Writing Outlines with AI - AI assists in creating detailed and organized outlines.

·         Stage 3: Writing the First Draft - Students draft their work with AI support.

·         Stage 4: Consulting the Draft with AI - AI provides feedback and suggestions for improvement.

·         Stage 5: Rewriting the Draft - Students revise their drafts based on AI feedback.

·         Stage 6: Sharing Writing in Groups - Collaborative review and discussion of drafts.

·         Stage 7: Publishing on Padlet - Final drafts are published for broader sharing and feedback.

AI Limitations

Despite their capabilities, AI tools have limitations that educators must be aware of:

·         Lack of Real-World Understanding: AI may not fully grasp real-world contexts or nuances.

·         Potential for Bias and Misinformation: AI can propagate biases present in the training data and generate inaccurate information.

·         Focus on Form, Not Meaning: AI often focuses more on linguistic form than on the deeper meaning or context.

·         Not a Search Engine, Translator, or Grammar Checker: AI should not be mistaken for traditional search engines, translators, or grammar checkers, as its functionalities are broader and more complex.

 Conclusion

The integration of AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini in English language learning represents a significant shift in educational methodologies. These tools offer enhanced capabilities for dialogue simulation, creative writing, and multimodal learning, making education more interactive and personalized. While they present new opportunities, it is crucial to understand their limitations and use them as complementary tools in the teaching process. As technology continues to advance, educators must evolve and adapt, ensuring that they harness the full potential of AI to enrich the learning experience.
